Throughout history, people have improved the way communication and human interaction can be made. Harmful and sometimes fatal arguments and disagreements can o ccur on social media easily. Some of them occur between mutual friends, and family, while other disputes are between complete strangers. Most of these virtual confrontations are petty and not worth all the stress and drama. These social media sites can also be distracting and can stray a person off their intended motive. It is not rare that school students often wander away from their homework assignments, just so they can see the picture their friends put on Instagram or sneak in a quick game of World of Warcraft. When this happens, their grades are in jeopardy of going down and they could encounter inappropriate and corruptive websites. The positive thing that social media brings these people are the quick sharing of useful information. Students can send each other the work that they need instantly. Hannibal Essay Hannibal, a Carthaginian general and one of the greatest generals that ever lived was renown for his strategies and courageousness, such as crossing the Alps and using the bottleneck strategy at Lake Trasemene. He used strategies that a lot of generals at this time, especially Roman generals, would never think of and in doing this he almost destroyed the Roman republic. Hannibals first battle took place when he was only nine. He went on an expedition with his father, Hamilcar Barca, to conquer Spain. From the beginning Carthages push into Spain, Hannibal vowed eternal hatred for Rome; Hannibal became Commander in Chief of Carthages army when he was 26 after his father was assassinated. His conquest of the Roman town of Sagunto in Spain led to a new declaration of war by Rome; which started the second Punic War and Hannibals promise to visit Roman injustice back on Rome a hundred fold. For Carthage to take the town of Sagunto was completely within the rights of the Carthage and the tr eaty but Rome at the time was getting too big and becoming very imperialistic. All Rome could see was that they had to have all of the Mediterranean and the only thing that stood in their way was a single General and his men. The way in which the Romans were unconsciously straying from mos maiorum to manipulate the course of events was disturbing. Though these actions were not entirely the evil work of Rome. Hannibal from his earliest memories could recall nothing but hatred for Rome. Hannibals Father had instilled a horrifically self-destructive desire within Hannibal to see the fall of Rome. This desire manifested itself during The Second Punic War, which was the ultimate fight for supremacy in the Ancient World. The victor would have control over the entire Mediterranean Sea and all of the trade routes bringing land, pride, wealth, and dominance over the victors enemies. Hannibal took a 1,000 mile trek from New Carthage, Spain, through the Alps, Northern Italy, and finally to Car thage. Hannibal won most of his battles with Rome, but never got the reinforcement he needed to over take Rome. The men that he had with him at the time were renowned for their loyalty to Hannibal and unconventional fighting tactics. Their Gorilla type war fair or wars of delaying almost saw the defeat of Rome but Rome finally assimilated these new tactics and used them against Hannibal, the man who had taught them to Rome. The Second Punic War was a turning point in Roman history, with profound implications for the Republic. The most immediate and obvious effect was the acquisition of territory; in the space of fifty years Rome had acquired most of the western Mediterranean. In doing this, the Romans viewed the war with Hannibal, and Hannibal himself, in nearly mythic terms. Later Romans saw this as Romes heroic age, a time when the villains were most villainous and the heroes most heroic. It was an age when all Romans were virtuous and everything worked. This being far from the truth did in the end teach the Romans their lesson of humility and if anything that mos maiorum needed to be followed more stringently and a conservative revival was needed. Although Hannibal never again actually threatened Rome, his memory did constantly. He became a monster, a brutal and cunning invader who was stopped only by the epic courage and perseverance of Rome. As is common one only hears of the victors side of the story. A different perspective is that Hannibal was fighting for the unwarranted treatment of the Carthaginians and all others that Rome had consumed. In Livys description of Hannibal as apposed to in An Enemy of Rome, Hannibal is not made out to be the spawn of the underworld, hell-bent on Romes destruction, but a great man whom was horrifying but merely misguided. Livy is also very quick to complement Hannibal and tell the reader just how great a leader he was. This is done so that when one looks back at Hannibal they say that if Hannibal was such a great leader Rome must have been far superior to be able to defeat him. This sense of modesty or mos maiorum was how the Romans were supposed to treat the Carthaginian General but they did not. It is very interesting to see that all the evil qualities Livy talks about that are in direct contradiction with mos maiorum were said to be traits of Hannibal, but for the most part were actually how the Romans themselves had acted. Hannibals actions constituted such a threat to the Roman way of life not because of the physical threat to the Romans but because he did the impossible and made it to the gates of the city of Rome. He accomplished this by talking about how the battlegrounds at Gettysburg should be in honor of the thousands that had lost their lives for the citizens of America. Dedicating the battlegrounds to those that lose their lives was the start of how America would honor troops the fallen and the soldiers left behind. This was a sign of respect and appreciation for all of the troops that fought during this battle. It is important to consider the message with respect to the time period in which the speech is given. Dr. King hoped for a better society as a whole; His speech was not solely in regards to the equality for African Americans, he wanted equality for all Americans in general. Analysis: â€Å"I have A Dream Speech† by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. ’s speech entitled â€Å"I have a Dream† was given in Washington DC at the Lincoln Memorial. King starts his introduction by referring back to Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg’s Address â€Å"Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow as we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. † 10 King refers to Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation because it helped free slaves. However, he called out the fallacies in Lincoln’s speech by making note of the fact that Negroes still were not free, one hundred years after slavery had officially ended. 11 During this time period, African Americans’ oppression came in the form of segregation and discrimination. Before delving into the heart of his speech, King mentions how the government had failed the African American population by pacifying them false promises and policies after the abolishment of slavery. King states, â€Å"America has given the Negro people a bad check; a check which has come back marked â€Å"insufficient funds. †12 This means, America did not grant Negros with the same equality and opportunities as Caucasians, or any other race during this time. Although the government policies banned slavery and poor treatment of African Americans, these policies had also failed the African American population by not making sure that the policies were strictly enforced. In his speech, King answers the critics when they asked, â€Å"When will you be satisfied? †13 King gives a comprehensive list of things that would satisfy African Americans, as a whole. He mentions police brutalities and the unfair economic statutes of African Americans. King wanted to instill into the minds of the African American people that they should not be satisfied with these injustices, but fight against them in a non-violent way. Before King began to conduct the â€Å"I have a Dream† portion of his speech he ensured the African American people that their efforts had not taken place in vain and that they should not give up hope for better days! Dr. King began his speech by telling his audience that his dream is deeply rooted in the sought-after American Dream14. King mentions this because he wants America’s people to believe the vales, morals, and core roots on which America was established. It was important to him to continuously advocate his never-ending hope that African Americans would obtain the American Dream, just as other American citizens of other races had done. In his speech, Dr. King mentions how all men are created equal and how the color of one’s skin should not factor into one’s ability to obtain equality. Martin Luther King Jr. emphasizes that â€Å"one day little black and white children will join hands and be as brothers and sisters15. † Although he refers to only two primary races, his words can be applied to children of all races. He references children because they are the future and ultimately look to them to become the generation of change. King recites the lyrics to â€Å"My country Tis of Thee† because he wanted to clearly deliver the message that America is supposed to be a land of freedom and opportunities for all. By using one of America’s most prominent, national songs, King showcased that he had not lost faith in America as a whole. He believed in America, although our country had been neglecting African Americans for many years. The most powerful part of King’s speech was when he repeated â€Å"let freedom ring. † He believed one day that freedom would ring all over the United States for all people. This is because King wanted to live in a world where all cultures and religions could join together as one and thought that this was important to make come to pass. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ’s dream has come true in today’s society. People of all races live together as one. There are still some racial issues in the world, but it is not the noticeable issue that it once was. Children of all races go to school and join hands with each other daily. Africans Americans are now afforded the same opportunities as white Americans in education as well as economically. The election of President Obama is another continuation of Dr. King’s dream. Furthermore, Dr. King’s hard work paid off because race is not even a huge deal in today’s society. The speech is taught in many classrooms and it is recited at many Black History programs yearly. Therefore, Martin Luther King Jr. should not only be remembered for this â€Å"I Have a Dream† speech, but as a man with a plan to make his dream come true, especially since it would become so influential as years passed!
